Do you use a gas stove or an electric stove? There are big differences between the two types of stoves, and those differences will require different kinds of stove repair. Pomona residents can take heart, however – there are simple solutions that work for any kind of stove.

First off, a lesson in how your stove actually works. The electric stove is much simpler, power flows from a switch heater to the heating elements on the stove. Most stoves have four elements, all of which can be replaced quite easily. By contrast, the gas stove works when separate systems release the gas and an igniter lights it.

That makes the gas stove more efficient, but also less susceptible to amateur stove repair. Pomona technicians can tell you that all the extra parts make it much trickier.

Nevertheless, the actual repair job can be a simple matter of cleaning the unit. Think of the stove as an appliance that needs fuel to function. In the electric stove, the fuel is the electricity. In the gas stove, the fuel obviously comes from the gas. Keep either model from what they need, and they won’t work.

For the electric stove, a faulty heating element usually breaks down and can no longer receive power. This could happen when the coils inside break down, causing a burnout. For gas stoves, a clogged element keeps the gas where the igniter cannot light it.

Fix the problem by fixing the elements. In and electric model, the element may be ruined to the point where no repair work can make a difference. In this case, you’d need to replace the whole element. No worries here, for less than $20 you can get a replacement. Most elements can be removed by hand – just make sure the heat has actually been turned off.

Problems with the gas stove are usually solved with a simple cleaning. Special tools exist specifically for cleaning stoves, but usually a soft-bristled brush can do the trick, along with a toothbrush for the more delicate parts. Sometimes the food and waste builds up underneath, where we think it’s not doing any harm. That all changes when it stops the gas flow.
