There’s nothing worse than coming home and finding a broken refrigerator. Without it, you ruin all the perishable food that’s stored inside, and leave yourself with no place to keep what food is left. Unless you like shopping for food every night, you’re best served by immediately seeking refrigerator repair. Orange residents would probably prefer the convenience to the aggravating hassle.

Like other cooling appliances, your refrigerator has a condenser and an evaporator. A liquid coolant flows through both, which then chills the air inside the refrigerator. The thermostat inside makes sure that the temperature doesn’t get too cold, and stops frost and ice from building up.

This system is constantly in use, and it’s actually quite surprising that problems don’t arise with greater frequency. By contrast, appliances like microwaves and stoves will likely give you more problems despite less use. Better yet, the average homeowner can do much of his own refrigerator repair.

Orange residents should take note of the few simple tips:

The refrigerator is at its loudest when it’s trying to cool the air. Typically, this happens when the temperature inside has dropped too low to keep food cold. Ask yourself why if the motor is constantly running to chill the unit. It could be that the door is broken and letting warm air in.

The rubber seal around the door is called a gasket. Sometimes it becomes cracked and hard, which damages its ability to become airtight on the door. Run your finger along the gasket when the door is closed, and make sure that you can’t feel any air escaping.

If the gasket is broken, find the right replacement gasket before you proceed. Write down the make and model of your refrigerator so that assistants at your hardware store can easily direct you to the right place. Older models may require the managers to order the gasket for you, further delaying the time between you and a working refrigerator.

Remove the gasket one part at a time; never try removing it all at once. After you’ve removed it, you can easily see how the new gasket will fit in its place. Give the whole area a thorough cleaning before you attach the new gasket – this is a rare opportunity to clean such a hard-to-reach spot.
