Don’t mess around when it comes to home air conditioner repair. Long Beach and other major cities are sure to have no lack of professionals who will get your machine back in perfect working order. There are a lot of mistakes you can make if you attempt your own repairs, and many agree that this isn’t the place for amateurs to experiment.

However, there are some ways that homeowners can pre-empt serious trouble. Have a professional conduct a formal inspection every year, preferably before the machine is about to undergo some heavy usage. This annual inspection will give you both peace of mind, and the satisfaction of knowing that you have possibly prevented some expensive home air conditioner repair. Long Beach inspectors would follow the same checklist as they would in any other American city, reducing the possibility of serious error on their part.

First a little on how your air conditioner actually works. The air conditioner has two parts – the evaporator and the condenser. To make things easier, remember that the evaporator is usually located inside the house, whereas the condenser is usually the box-shaped air conditioning unit outside of the house. Hot air inside the house is cooled by the blowers in the evaporator, then distributed aross the house through the ducts.

The condenser is usually the best place to start looking for problems. If the condenser doesn’t run, it’s more than likely a blown circuit breaker or fuse. Make sure you first turn the power off before using a screwdriver to remove the lid from the condenser. The switch to shut the power off is usually located on the main electrical panel.

Cleaning the inside should be a matter of common sense. If you see any dirt, make sure you remove it. Try not to bend the fins of the fan, unless one of those fins looks bent out of shape already. All this sounds very simple, and it is. But many of the most serious problems stem from a dirty evaporator. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best answer.
