In 2005, Yorba Linda was named as the 21st best place to live in the US. The town is also one of the richest in the country. Despite this level of affluence, there are still those residents who will be interested in maintaining lower utility bills by regular furnace repair. Yorba Linda has more than 58,000 residents, and it is certain that amongst their homes there is room for improvements to their furnaces’ efficiency through furnace repair.

Yorba Linda is located inside Orange County, so heat is only needed for a few months out of the year. However, residents can understand how their furnace can be improved to save money during those months. First, it’s important to understand the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) number. Every furnace is assigned an AFUE number that reflects its level of efficiency, based on the cost of running the mechanism. For example, an AFUE of 85 means that for each dollar that the owner spends on fuel, 85 cents worth of the heat is delivered into their living space. The remainder, or the equivalent of 15 cents, is the money lost due to the unit’s inefficiency. That amount of heat escapes with the gases that are produced as a byproduct of running the heater.  Keeping the furnace maintained means that the unit has the best chance of operating at its assigned AFUE. However, failure to perform regular maintenance, such as changing the filters or keeping the registers free of dust, will lower the effective AFUE. An unserviced, unmaintained furnace with an 85% AFUE may actually be running at 70% or lower, so that you could literally be throwing money away.
